Pic of an XJ-S racecar (taken in the early ‘90s) for your time...

So this hour of the day, in my office, is when business typically quiets down a lot. Except for today (really every day for the past week or so). The flat roof of our building is being replaced, and they seem to start right around 3PM. Being that my cube is on the top floor, the constant buzzing, rumbling, pounding, ceiling & floor shaking is incredibly unnerving and distracting.

So 2 of the 4 support guys in my department are busy, I’m working on a different problem, and the phone is ringing. I have no idea where support guy #3 is.

I look over at support guy #4, and see his eyes closed and his head nodding. I couldn’t help it at this point.

“How the hell can you sleep with this racket going on?”

He had a code brown moment, sat up and attempted to look like he was doing something. Everyone else in the department (5 other people) burst out laughing.

It’s a regular thing for people to peek over his cube wall and see him sleeping...so it’s not like I just got him fired. This wasn’t the first time, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Just blows my mind, is all...

In that situation - even if he DOES get fired - just remember that you didn’t get him fired - he did.

Well...part of the issue here is that he won’t get fired. Those who could fire him know the situation. The idea there is that he will never advance. They’ll leave him to rot in his low position until he decides to leave or steps up his performance.

He’s actually one of the more effective support guys in that he has the knowledge and talent to fix the majority of the problems coming to him, just not a whole lot of initiative. #1 takes initiative, but has little knowledge. #2 has lots of knowledge but almost negative initiative in that he wants to do more but actually does little of what’s given to him in the first place. #3 is the one I really want to see go. He’s a temp, and I can only hope he’s just not hired when the trial period is over. I’ll get to have some input in this decision, but it may get overlooked.
